Every Sunday I like to write about 3 random things that are on my mind.

Sometimes these things are about business…

Sometimes they’re about life…

And other times they’re just truly random.

However…

Right now I’m in Vegas for a few weeks…

So I’m gonna do a special “3 thoughts” on things that intrigue me about Las Vegas…

Let’s dig in…

1.  There are two currencies in Las Vegas – money and attractive women

There’s a very real difference in how men and women experience Las Vegas.

Women (if they’re attractive) have the red carpet rolled out for them at every restaurant, dinner etc…

But for men, Vegas is very different.

I’ll give you a good example…

Let’s say you have a bachelor party with 12 guys and you want to celebrate at XS ( a club in Vegas) for the night.

Your options are…

– Buy a general admission ticket for $100 each, and then spend $20 on every drink you get

– Buy a table that’s gonna cost $5k-$10k on most nights

That’s your options.

Now contrast that with a bachelorette party of 12 girls and you get a very different reality.

Cause that group of 12 girls will be welcomed into pretty much every club without paying a cover charge.

They most likely won’t buy a drink all night…

And there’s a good chance a group of guys who paid $5-10k for a table will ask the ladies to join their table for the night.

This is how Vegas operates.

It’s all about currency.

And the currency in Vegas is either being an attractive woman…

Or being someone with money.

That’s what it boils down to.

And it’s pretty fascinating when you start to see that “matrix” and how it works.

Cause it will change the way you think about things.

Alright, let’s hop to the second thought on my mind this morning…

2.  Most people act according to their surroundings (AKA they go crazy when in Vegas)

Gary Halbert had a famous saying “you’re a different person in church than you are in a strip club”.

This is a good representation of Las Vegas.

A lot of people who are quiet suburb dwellers all of a sudden turn into animals in Vegas.

Chugging 12 beers like there’s no tomorrow…

Snorting cocaine til 4 in the morning…

Spending $1000 to go in the back room of a strip club…

It all happens in Vegas.

And it happens with the people you’d least suspect it to.

Why?

Cause Vegas gives people a hall pass to get crazy.

There’s no judgement.

It’s all in the name of fun…

And that’s a very attractive proposition to someone who feels all bundled up and constrained in their daily life.

Alright let’s do one more of these…

3. I was reminded of the golden rule of marketing last night watching The Chainsmokers – it’s always about your audience and not about you

Last night I went out to XS with a few friends and The Chainsmokers (they’re dj’s) were playing.

One thing that’s interesting about them is that they have a bunch of their own songs that they sing on.

So if they wanted, they could play an entire show of just their songs.

And people would gladly show up for it.

However, they don’t do that.

Why?

Cause it wouldn’t be as fun of a show.

What they do is mix their own songs in with  different house songs, sing-along-songs and some hip hop.

So instead of just hearing The Chainsmokers at 3 AM, you’re hearing songs like…

Journey’s Don’t stop believin’….

Or The Killers’ Mr. Brightside…

And judging by the crowd’s reaction, THIS is what people want.

Cause when these songs come on, they go nuts and sing along together.

Everyone is having a good time…

So it’s super smart that the Chainsmokers do this.

They’re not letting their ego get in the way.

They know it’s all about the crowd…

And the fun the crowd is having.

Anyways…

Thought that was a good marketing lesson, so wanted to share.

Alright, I need to wrap this up…

And get outside and get some sun on my pasty skin.

Hope you got a nugget or two from this.

Enjoy your Sunday,
