Every Sunday morning I like to write about 3 random things that are on my mind.

Sometimes these things are about business…

Sometimes they’re about life…

And other times they’re just completely random.

So with that said…

Let’s jump into the first thing on my mind this morning.

1.  Anytime you spend money to “keep up with the Joneses” you will probably regret it

Yesterday I was listening to a Ramit Sethi podcast where he had a couple on who had bought an investment property and they were now losing money because of it.

Basically they bought the property at the top of the market in Toronto…

And now they were struggling to get renters on Airbnb…

So they were hemorraging money every month.

After a few questions from Ramit, it finally came to light that they didn’t really think this purchase through.

They didn’t run the numbers…

Or consider any worst case scenarios…

In fact, the main reason they bought it was because another couple they know (who makes less money than them) also has a “vacation home”.

And they felt like they SHOULD have one too.

Talk about stupid.

But also a good learning lesson…

Anytime you’re buying things – houses, cars, investments – in order to get approval from other people, it’s going to be a bad purchase.

Why?

Because you’re not thinking rationally.

You’re just trying to get approval.

And you can’t make a rational decision when you’re worried about getting other people’s approval.

Alright let’s hop to the second thought on my mind this morning…

2.  Repetition breeds success…so if you stop doing something, you won’t be as good at it

After I finished my email yesterday, I noticed something unusual.

I wasn’t happy with the email.

Overall, it felt clunky…

And it wasn’t smooth.

I was beating myself up over this, and trying to figure out why, but then it became obvious to me…

I hadn’t written an email in 12 days.

When I was in Mexico, I stopped doing my daily emails, and just enjoyed my time there.

So the reality was that I was rusty.

I wasn’t getting the reps in like usual.

And it showed in my writing.

But here’s the thing…

This pretty much happens with everything.

Reps are the key to getting good (and staying good).

If you’re a pro golfer, and you stop practicing your putting for two weeks, then your short game is gonna suffer.

And if you’re trying to learn a second language, and you don’t speak that language for two weeks, it’s gonna feel clunky.

That’s how everything works.

It’s all about reps.

So if you want to get good at something, you need to consistently put in the reps.

Alright let’s hop to the last thought on my mind this morning.

This one is all about my latest quest to be more active.

3.  I’ve averaged 10,000 steps a day since Nov 28th, and here’s what I found…

A few weeks back I made the decision to walk 10,000 steps a day.

Why?

Well mostly because I was too sedentary.

On an average day, I’d hit 3500 steps.

Which is pretty bad.

So I decided to shoot for 10,000.

And this is usually broken up with a 30 minute walk in the morning…

A 20 minute walk mid day…

And then a 30 minute walk in the evening.

Since I started this, I’ve noticed a few key benefits such as…

– my body composition looks better (my love handles have signifcantly shrunk)

– I feel like I have more energy throughout the day

– I’m now finding myself looking for ways to walk instead of drive (which was the total opposite before)

So it’s been worth it.

But it also hasn’t been easy.

I have to actively try to hit 10,000 steps.

If I simply go about my day and I don’t think about it, I won’t get anywhere near 10,000.

So it takes planning…

And some nights I’m bundling up and braving the cold at 8 PM just to get my final steps in.

But…

I’m seeing benefits from it…

And it has a whole host of long-term benefits like living longer and better mobility…

So I’m gonna keep doing it.

Anyways…

I need to wrap this up cause I need to get my morning walk in.

Hope you got a nugget or two from this.

Enjoy your Sunday,

– Justin
