Every Sunday morning I like to write about 3 random things that are on my mind.
Sometimes these things are about business…
Sometimes they’re about life…
And other times they’re just truly random.
However…
Today I’m smack dab in the middle of the re-launch of my list building course.
So today’s 3 thoughts are gonna be all about why and how you should build a list.
So let’s jump to the first thing on my mind this morning…
1. A lot of top-level copywriters hit a “ceiling” on their income around $250k-$400k a year, this is usually a sign that it’s time to do your own thing
Over the last few months, I’ve had a similar conversation with 4 different high-level copywriters who were frustrated at being “stuck” at the same income level as they were at last year.
These are top-tier copywriters, so they’re usually making in the $250k-$400k range.
Which is great money.
But the reality is that they could be making a lot more.
Why?
Because right now their income has a ceiling on it.
They can only write so many promos per year…
And they can only charge so much for those promos.
So there’s a reason that many top-level copywriters get stuck when they start hitting $250k-$400k in income.
They’ve maxed out everything they can do.
And there’s no more water to wring out of that towel.
So they basically are left with two options…
They can keep doing what they’re doing, and exchanging hourse for dollars with client work.
OR…
They can continue to write for clients, while also starting the process of building their own thing.
My suggestion to a lot of my friends who are in this position is to start building your own thing.
Usually that starts with a list.
You want something that you OWN.
Something that lets you escape the hours for dollars trap that you’re in.
Cause once you have your own list…
You have leverage.
And when you have leverage, you can do the work once and sell that product to tens of thousands of people.
This is how you escape the income ceiling that most top copywriters run into.
This is how you start making $700k a year…
Or a million a year…
It’s all about giving yourself more leverage.
So if you’re one of top-tier copywriters that’s hitting an income ceiling, then it’s time to start thinking about building your own thing.
Alright let’s hop to the next thought on my mind this morning…
2. If you’re relying on any one social media platform for your following (like Tik Tok) you are a split second away from losing your livelihood
Last week we had government hearings in the US about TikTok.
And in many of the hearings you had small business owners and influencers telling congress that if TikTok gets banned, their entire livelihood would go away.
Which obviously isn’t a great spot to be in.
But I’m always puzzled by the number of Youtubers, IG stars and Tik Tokers who are willing to build an entire business on a platform that they don’t control.
Think about that…
You could have a million followers on Tik Tok…
And if they don’t like your account…
Or if the US government puts the ban hammer on TikTok, you’re done for.
It’s a very vulnerable spot to be in.
Kind of like hanging in the gallows, waiting for the block to be kicked out from under your feet.
This is why I’m such a big believer in having an email list.
Cause with email, at least you have control over the subscribers.
If Maropost decides to ban me, I can simply take my list over to Active Campaign.
But if my only following is on Youtube…
Or Tiktok…
And they decide to ban me, I’m toast.
So you want to have control over your following…
And in my opinion the best way to do that is with your own list.
Alright let’s hop to the third thought on my mind this morning…
3. There’s BIG money in small lists
Most people think you need a massive 100k person email list if you want to make money from email.
But I haven’t found that to be true.
I’ll give you an example…
My friend Andrew has a 4700 person list in the men’s dating niche and he pulls in $150k-$200k a year from that list.
How?
By selling high ticket coaching.
During COVID he ran an 8-week program (all online) on how to meet and date the kind of women you’ve always wanted.
I believe he had 15 guys sign up for that…
And each one paid $7k to be in the program.
So he made over $100k just off that one coaching program.
So this idea that you need a massive list to make a bunch of money is simply not true.
What you actually need is a list that has “people with money” on it.
That’s the key.
You could have a 100,000 person list, but if they’re all miserable tire kickers, you won’t make shit.
But on the other hand…
If you have a 500 person list, and if most of the people on the list are “people with money”, you could easily make 6-figures a year from that list.
It’s not about the size of the list…
It’s about the quality.
Keep that in mind…
