Last year on Mother’s Day, I had one of my biggest “ah ha” moments with email marketing.

Here’s the story…

I was in LA that weekend working with Brent (my coach/therapist)…

And that Sunday was Mother’s Day.

So I decided to write a very personal email to my list all about my strained relationship with my mom.

I talked about how my mom was super critical of me growing up…

How nothing I ever did was good enough for her…

And how that made me feel like a piece of shit for most of my life.

I talked about how I felt seeing everyone on Facebook gloat about how they had the “best mom”.

And how I felt knowing that I would never feel that way about my mom.

It was probably the most emotionally open email I had written to that point.

It took me over an hour to write.

I edited it multiple times.

Re-edited it.

I even debated for a good 10 minutes whether I actually wanted to send it out.

Deep down, I was scared to push the “send” button.

Why?

Cause I had a lot of lingering doubts on my mind…

What if people didn’t like it?

Hell… what if my mom was secretly on my email list and she saw the email?

All of that shit was racing through my mind.

Eventually…

After a lot of deliberation…

I finally said “fuck it” and hit the send button.

I remember waiting there nervously waiting for it to show up in my inbox.

A minute went by and it didn’t show up.

2 minutes…

3 minutes…

I opened Maropost to make sure it had sent.

Yep, it sent.

Then out of the corner of my eye I saw it come into my inbox.

But there was a problem.

A big problem…

It wasn’t in my main inbox…

It went to the promo tab.

My immediate reaction was letting out a long, angry “FUCKKKKKKKKKKK”.

I couldn’t believe it.

I worked so hard on this damn email.

I bared my soul talking about some of my biggest insecurities…

And guess what?

The damn thing ends up in the promo tab.

Seriously, what the hell?

I was livid.

The rage was just pouring out of me.

I wanted to break something.

It all felt like it was a waste.

Why did I spend all that time writing this email,  only for it to go to the promo tab?

Talk about a total kick in the balls.

After I vented for a good 15 minutes, I finally started to calm down.

But deep down I was still angry.

If you send a lot of emails, you probably can relate to this.

It just sets me off when I hit the promo tab.

Cause that means most people won’t see what I wrote.

So I basically wasted all that time…

And bared my soul for nothing.

Not fun.

But on the brightside…

There was something good that came out of my Mother’s Day email fiasco…

And that’s the fact that it opened my eyes to why it’s so important to keep your emails out of the promo tab.

I knew this already.

But sometimes you have to be bashed over the head with these things before they really “sink in”.

If you’ve read my last few emails, you know I’ve been talking a lot about the promo tab.

And specifically…

I’ve been talking about the new course my buddy Ian Stanley and Andrew Clark put out on how to  get out of the Gmail promo tab.

I even bought the course myself.

And what they teach in the course for $99 is literally the same thing I paid an email deliverability expert $8500 for a few years ago.

That’s not hyperbole either.

These guys are literally teaching the exact same thing that I paid $8500 for.

And they’re charging $99 for their course.

So if you have an email list, it’s a no-brainer.

And one thing I like about the course is that it’s incredibly simple.

And super-short (it’s 14 minutes and 48 seconds total)

But the information in it is GOLD.

Ian and Andrew show you exactly how to avoid the promo tab in Gmail by using something called “seed accounts”.

Seed accounts are a way to test your email before you send it to your list to see if it will go to promo or the main inbox.

And guess what?

It works like a charm.

I’ve started doing it everyday for the last few days.

And I’m gonna make sure I keep doing it.

So I don’t wind-up with another “promo tab hell” like I did with my Mother’s Day email.

Anyways…

If you’re frustrated by hitting the promo tab with your emails…

I highly suggest picking it up.

It’s only $99.

Which is a complete steal.

So if that piques your interest, I suggest heading over to their site and learning more about the course right here.
