Recently, Stefan Georgi (a guy I consider the #1 copywriter in the world) wrote a post on Facebook saying….

“I’ve got 3-4 hours of good copywriting in me per day MAX.  During those hours, I’m one of the best in the world.  Afterwards I’m useless and it takes me 10 minutes to write a single sentence”.

I thought this was a great post…

And it’s relevant to what I was talking about yesterday with people trying to work 12-15 hours a day.

The reality is that if you’re doing something creative (like writing) you only have so many GOOD hours in you.

I’ll give ya a good example of this…

A few years ago, Craig Clemens (the genius behind Dr. Gundry’s copy) emailed me and said he was considering writing a daily email about marketing and copy similar to mine…

But Craig was worried that writing the email each morning would take away from the copy that he writes each day for Gundry.

So he emailed me back and asked…

“How do you feel after you write your emails?  Do you feel invigorated?  Or are you more depleted?”

My answer?

Depleted.

I put everything I have into this email each morning.

And by the time I finish it, I’m spent.

My brain is fried.

And I need a break.

So I usually go for a walk…

Or I make some breakfast…

That way my mind can relax.

And I can re-charge.

That’s what works for me.

Point being…

If you’re writing copy, I don’t think you’re meant to write for 10 or 12 hours a day.

Sure you can do it if you have to…

But you’re much better off putting in 3-4 hours of focused writing, and then closing your laptop.

That way your writing will stay fresh…

And you won’t feel so drained when you’re done.

You have to keep in mind that writing copy is a creative endeavor.

And anything that’s creative (like writing, making music or drawing) isn’t meant to be monotonous like factory work.

You need to feel energized…

And you need to have a clear head when you write.

And that’s pretty hard to do if you’re slogging through 10 or 12 hour writing days.

So my advice?

Be aware of how much GOOD writing you can really do each day.

And when you hit that point…

Shut it down for the day.

That’s my 2 cents…

Enjoy your Wednesday…
