An interesting question came in from a reader yesterday…

“Hi Justin, I just watched your YouTube video – The #1 thing I wish I knew when I started online marketing.

I had some success in business before I started online marketing which gave me money to invest in education.

I’ve spent around $80k so far on courses and mentors and I’ve made a few dollars in dribs and drabs but I’m still struggling.

I’ve learned a ton and I’m highly ambitious and hard working but still not struck gold.

My wife is resistant to me investing in more mentors now. She’s become skeptical seeing me put in so much effort and money without getting a ROI.

I’d be very happy to invest again if I knew I’d get a return.

I’ve learned Facebook ads. I’ve built Facebook groups funnels. And I’ve bouoght courses under some smart marketers.

I’ve got a family to take care of so the motivation to build a business and an asset couldn’t be higher but I don’t know which way to turn.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I messaged this guy my thoughts already…

But I want to expand on it here, cause this is a common issue with newer people.

It would be easy to simply call this guy lazy…

And to say he’s not working hard enough.

From my short convo with him, I don’t think that’s the case.

The real issue is that he hasn’t gotten good at a money-making skill.

And for our industry that means…

Writing copy…

Or media buying…

Think about it…

Every single person in this industry who does well  was REALLY good at one of these skills before they got rich.

Mike Geary – amazing media buyer

Emily Lark – great copywriter

Craig Clemens – great copywriter

Allen Baler – amazing media buyer

Marc Stockman/Jeff Radich – great copywriters

Jay Deiboldt- great copywriter

Chris Clark – amazing media buyer

Nick Daniel – amazing media buyer

I could go on and on with this…

But it’s pretty clear to me.

You have to have one of these money-making skills if you want to succeed.

You either have to be able to drive traffic (media buying)…

Or you have to be able to write high converting copy.

Without one of those two skills…

The odds of you getting rich are close to zero.

Cause when you boil it down…

A direct response business is all about bringing in new buyers.

That’s what this business is about.

It’s what drives everything you do.

And bringing in new buyers is all about two things…

Good copy…

And media buying

So you have to be good at one of those skills.

My suggestion is to focus on one of them…

And get really damn good.

Build an actual skill set that you’ll profit from for the rest of your life.

That’s my 2 cents…

Enjoy your Thursday,

– Justin
