True story, back in 2009 when I was making my hay as a freelance copywriter, I eventually came to the conclusion that I hated freelancing.
Why?
Mostly because of all the little annoyances that go along with client work.
Like when a client wouldn’t pay me on time, and I had to spend weeks reminding them about the invoice…
Or when a client constantly wanted me to “hop on a call” with them to discuss something (even though 9 times out of 10, the issue could have been solved with a simple email)…
Or when I finished an entire 36-page sales letter only to have the client change their mind about how they wanted the copy to sound…
All this stuff drove me nuts.
And after two years of it, I realized I wasn’t cut out for doing client work.
The clients were too controling for my tastes…
And I was tired of relying on them for my income.
So instead of trudging on with something I didn’t enjoy…
I decided to plot my “escape” from freelancing.
How?
By building my own list.
I figured if I had my own list, I wouldnt have to deal with any of the crap that goes along with freelancing.
I could do things my way.
And have more control over my work day.
So in 2009, I did exactly that and created my first list in the fitness niche.
I had no idea what I was doing at the time…
But I kept building that list…
And by 2010 it had grown to nearly 38,000 people.
Which was far more than I expected…
But what’s even crazier is the money that list started bringing in.
I was used to making around $50k a year as a freelancer…
But once I had my own list, I brought in a little over $210,000 in profit that first year.
Which was insane.
All I was doing was writing a couple emails a week.
And I’d make more money in a week than I used to make in an entire month!
Plus, I didn’t have to put up with any of the crap that I previously had to with clients.
So overall it was a big upgrade.
And I’m glad I got out of the freelancing game…
