“You made $120,000 as an affiliate?“
Back when I was a young pup learning how to make money, I decided to pony up some money and go to a marketing event in Vegas.
At the time I was an affiliate in the poker niche.
And there was an event held every year called CAC.
It was where all the big gaming affiliates met up.
So I decided to go.
I was all of 22 years old at the time.
And I was making like $500-$1000 a month…
I had heard rumors of guys online making $10k, $20k and even $50k a month as an affiliate.
I couldn’t even comprehend making that much money at the time.
It didn’t seem possible.
But I wanted to know more…
So I booked a flight to Vegas…
And got a room at Circus Circus (the shittiest and cheapest hotel on the strip).
As the event approached, I got nervous.
I thought about bailing out and not going.
I didn’t really know anyone there.
Mostly just guys I had talked to online.
So I was hesitant to go…
But luckily for me, I didn’t back out.
I boarded my flight to Vegas, and settled into my musty, smoke filled room at Circus Circus.
This room was a real gem I tell ya.
Looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks.
But it was all I could afford.
So I had to deal with it.
Once I got settled in, I walked over to the event at the Wynn.
I still remember walking in there…
I felt completely out of place…
I was younger than everyone…
And I made less money than everyone as well.
The guys were all wearing nice suits and blazers.
I was walking around in my Ohio State t-shirt that I wore to the gym everyday.
I was completely out of place.
However as awkward as I felt…
As the event went on…
I could feels things starting to shift for me.
And it wasn’t because of the content…
Or any of the tactics that I learned at the event…
It was from simply being around guys who were already successful affiliates.
I remember talking to one of the guys (Jeremy) who mentioned that he made around $120,000 the year before as an affiliate.
My jaw about hit the floor when he said this.
I couldn’t believe it.
“You made $120k promoting poker sites?” I said.
I literally didn’t know that was possible.
It was all so foreign to me.
I grew up with a dad that worked in a factory…
And a mom that worked as a waitress…
I thought you HAD to work a real job to make money.
I had no clue you could sit at home on your computer and make 6-figures.
But guys like Jeremy were doing it.
And hearing that firsthand was a complete mindshift for me.
Call it a “reality realignment”.
I came into the event thinking that if I could make $2k or $3k a month, I would be killing it.
But by the time I left…
I realized that I could make a living doing this.
I could make 6-figures like these guys were doing.
They weren’t any smarter than me…
They weren’t geniuses…
They were just normal dudes who had figured out how to be an affiliate.
And that was a game-changer for me.
Cause it showed me what was possible.
I had this narrow view of what I could do as an affiliate.
But after being around these guys for 3 days, I saw the bigger picture.
I saw the potential.
And over the next few years I worked to make that happen.
I slowly but surely went from making $30k a year to $50k a year, then eventually hitting $100k a year as an affiliate.
This was life-changing money for me back then.
And I doubt it would have happened if I hadn’t gone to that event and hung out with those guys who were already successful.
What’s funny is that I see the same thing at our events today…
A copywriter walks in thinking their biggest goal is to land a client and make a couple thousand bucks…
But after being around copywriters making $20k or $30k a month, their whole perspective changes.
They realize they could be playing a much bigger game.
And that they can land clients a lot easier than they think.
And this mindset shift is huge.
I saw it happen for copywriters like Michael Rochin, John Robb, Rod Tidwell, Areeba Ahmed, Amber Peoples and more…
They came to an event thinking one thing…
And left with a completely different outlook on what’s possible for them.
And that’s very, very powerful.
Because it completely changes what you’re able to achieve.
