These girls are completely immature, needy and full of drama” – me watching the Bachelor every week

One of the most powerful marketing lessons I’ve gleaned from watching the Bachelor is that if you put out the wrong “bait”, you’re going to attract the wrong customers.

For example…

On the Bachelor, there’s 30+ women all vying for the heart of Pete the Pilot.

And in the end, he’s going to choose one woman that he wants to marry.

However…

If you’ve watched the show, you know that most of these women are a complete mess.

They’re emotionally unstable…

They’re immature…

Many of them are just looking to be famous.

So it’s a whole medley of dysfunction.

A buddy of mine who watches the show texted me the other day and said “I dont understand why all these girls on the show are so messed up?”

It was a serious question on his part.

So I replied with my thoughts…

Because that’s the exact kind of woman that would apply to be on a 10-week reality dating show.

Think about it…

There’s very little chance that an emotionally stable woman who has her life together would drop everything and go on national TV to compete with 30 other women for a guy she doesn’t even know.

I mean how many normal people would do that?

Very few.

So the very setup of the show is only going to attract a certain type of woman.

And that’s women who are most likely…

Starved for attention…

Needy…

And emotionally immature.

Which are all qualities that make for GREAT tv.

Hell, they make for incredible TV ( I’m hooked).

But…

If ole’ Pete is truly looking for a wife, then making himself the Bachelor is probably not the smartest solution.

Because the entire show is setup to attract women that would NOT make a good long term partner.

Does that make sense?

And whether you care about Pete or the Bachelor that doesn’t really matter.

Cause the point I want you to take away from this is that many entrepreneurs make the same mistake in their business as Pete is making with his love life.

They put out “bait” that attracts the wrong kind of people.

Think about it…

If you’re trying to attract rich entrepreneurs to your financial services firm, putting on a free chicken dinner like you do for retirees probably isn’t the best “bait” for that situation.

Why?

Because rich entrepreneurs are busy.

And they value their time.

A free chicken dinner isn’t going to motivate a successful guy or gal making $20 million a year to come hear you talk.

But if you changed it up and appealed to them specifically, you’d have a better shot.

Maybe something like an exclusive round-table with 15 of the most successful entrepreneurs in their city (and they get an award).

That would probably be a lot more appealing to a  successful entrepreneur..

See the difference?

The “bait” you use matters.

Because the bait determines what KIND of people you’re going to bring in.

So you want to make sure your bait matches the exact kind of people you want as customers.

That’s a simple idea…

But it’s one that most people get wrong.

Keep that in mind.
