On Thursday while I was doing a little talk for Brian Kurtz’s Xcelerator group, a discussion between Brian and I broke out about email.

The topic?

Small lists.

Specifically I talked about the fact that I have a pretty small list (around 3000 people) yet my business still makes a few million dollars a year.

Which is surprising to a lot of people.

Cause the assumption is that you need a big list…

Or a huge following on Youtube…

But that’s not necessarily true.

In fact, I’d venture to say I make a lot more money than most of the people with big followings.

Why?

Well it really boils down to this…

I care a lot more about WHO is on my list than how many people are on it.

Sure, I want more people on my list (and I’m actively trying to grow it now).

But what really matters is WHO those the people on my list are…

For example, a 50,000 person list full of flighty biz-opp seekers who don’t want to do any work and just want a magic bullet is a shitty list.

I don’t want those people.

In fact, I actively try to filter those people out.

What I do want are serious business owners…

Or successful copywriters…

Or marketers who have been doing this for a few years…

That’s what I want.

And that’s what I really care about.

And because that’s my focus, it’s why I’m able to make the kind of money I make off a list thats quite small.

So the big lesson here is simple…

It’s not the list size that is important.

It’s WHO is on your list.

Getting the right kind of people on your list is a lot more important than simply adding more names.

Keep that in mind…
