You wouldn’t think you could learn a lot about marketing while sitting in line for 3 hours at the DMV…

But that’s exactly what happened to me this morning.

Here’s the story…

Last week I realized that I needed to get a new drivers license.

Why?

Because I’m lazy, and I’m still using my old Ohio drivers license from many years ago.

When I moved to Austin three years ago, I was technically supposed to get a new license.

But I never did.

I just kept using my Ohio one.

However, my Ohio license expires in about 10 days on March 1st.

Which means I won’t be able to drive if I don’t get a new one. 

So this morning I spent three cheerful hours at the DMV waiting to get a new license. 

And while I was bored out of my mind sitting at the DMV, I was reminded of a very valuable marketing lesson while I was there.

And that’s the power of deadlines.

When I first started writing copy, I heard John Carlton say something like “nothing ever gets done without a deadline”.

And there’s a lot of truth in that.

Cause human begins are inheritantly lazy.

And if we can avoid doing something (like going to the DMV to get a license) then we will avoid it.

It’s a lot easier to do nothing…

And just kick the can down the road.

But when there’s a deadline…

A real deadline with consequences…

We’re forced to move.

I can tell ya if there was no expiration date on my license I would have just kept using it for years to come.

There’s no chance in hell I would have gotten a new one.

But because there was a REAL deadline (i.e. my license is going to expire) I actually took action.

Well, the same thing happens in our businesses.

In fact, I saw it this week with the ticket sales for our Copy Accelerator event.

After selling the tickets for our mastermind since January, we decided to close the ticket sales today for good.

And guess what happened?

There was a mad dash of people signing up at the last minute.

I think close to 15 people signed up this week.

Which was probably more people than we had sign up in the last 3 weeks combined.

That’s the power of a deadline.

The same way I waited until the last minute to get my new license…

A lot of people waited til the last minute to buy their ticket for our event.

That’s human nature.

And it’s why deadlines work so, so well.

They force people into action.
