Every single marketer I know (including me) has had some major “marketing bombs” in their career.

For example…

Back in 2009, when I put out my first fitness ebook, I was convinced that I stumbled upon a unique angle that no one had ever thought of. 

My trainer at the time was really into Crossfit (which hadn’t exploded yet), so we decided to create an ebook with a crossfit style workout program.

So lot’s of circuit training…

And lots of compound exercises…

Now all this was fine and dandy…

However we made a boneheaded mistake when it came to the marketing.

I’m talking about an all-time blunder.

And here’s why…

At the time, the big rage in fitness was “functional fitness”.

So instead of everything being about looks…

It was about doing movements that helped you in your everyday life.

Which makes a lot of logical sense…

Doing a bunch of tricep kickbacks and calf raises aren’t going to really help you in your daily life.

They’re just for show.

So we had the brilliant idea that we would market this as a functional fitness program.

And that the big benefit would be that it would help you in your daily life…

Need to hoist a heavy box onto a shelf in your garage?  This program will help you with that.

Need to pick your toddler up off the floor?  This program will help you with that.

My partner Vic and I thought this was brilliant…

And that we were gonna completely change the fitness industry with this offer.

So we launched the offer to our internal list right after new years…

Our list was about 12,000 people at the time…

I had dreams of a couple thousand sales coming in from this. 

I was so excited, I felt like a kid on Christmas morning…

Finally it came time to send the first email out.

I remember checking the stats non-stop for the next half hour.

I’d click “refresh” every 10 seconds.

I thought something might have been broken cause no sales were coming in.

Eventually after about 40 minutes, our first sale came in. 

“Alright, now the sales are gonna start rolling in” I said.

I figured they just needed more time to read the sales page.

So I anxiously waited…

And waited…

And waited…

And guess what?

Nothing happened. 

Over the next few days, we made a grand total of 3 sales of the program. 

3 sales.

For a total of $117 in revenue. 

Our workout program was an epic failure. 

I remember feeling like I had been stabbed in the gut.

I had so much hope…

And so much work was put into this…

But it was a complete bomb.

And it bombed for good reason…

The marketing message was simply terrible.

We were selling something that nobody wanted.

I committed the cardinal sin of ignoring what was working in the marketplace…

And tried to do my own thing.

Big mistake.

This is a lesson that has stuck with me over the years.

And it’s one I harp on over and over again.

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

You just need to model what’s already working.
