Sit down and fill out your sheets Goff

Back when I played golf in highschool, after every round our coach made us fill out our “sheets”.

Which was basically a log of how you played…

It tallied things like how many greens you hit…

How many putts you had…

And how many up-and-downs you made etc…

Honestly, it was a pain in the ass to fill out.

And being the rebel that I was, I tried to weasel my way out of it everytime.

But my coach knew better.

And forced me to sit down and fill them out after every match.

I remember thinking it was a huge waste of time…

And that this damn sheet isn’t gonna help me be a better golfer.

But like most teenagers, I was an idiot.

And one day I finally saw the light.

We had just finished a match against our arch-rival St. Mary’s.

And I shot a 35.

So I was feeling good.

But while I was filling out my sheet…

My coach sat down next to me and pulled up some of my stats from our last 5-6 meets.

He mentioned that I was playing well, but there was an area I was leaving strokes on the course.

“Look at this” he said pointing at the sheet. “Anytime you have a putt over 25 feet, you’re 3-putting”.

I remember looking at him kind of confused.

Cause I was the best putter on the team.

But the more we dug in, the numbers didn’t lie.

My long putts needed work.

And I was losing strokes because of it.

So armed with that knowledge, we shifted a good bulk of my practice time to work on my “lag putts”.

(BTW a lag putt is basically when you have a long putt, and you’re not trying to make it, but just get it within 2-3 feet so you can 2-putt)

For the next few weeks I probably spent a good 20 minutes every day at practice hitting lag putts.

I’d hit them from 25 feet…

From 35 feet…

From 45 feet…

I’d even hit a few “bombs” from the other side of the green.

My goal wasn’t to make any of these putts…

It was to simply get them within 2-3 feet of the hole so I would have an easy tap-in for par.

And guess what?

After just a week of doing this, my lag putts got a whole lot better.

To the point that I cut down my 3 putts by like 60%.

So I started shooting lower scores.

And I wasn’t giving up strokes that I didn’t have to.

Now here’s the deal…

And how this relates to you and your business…

Even though the story I just shared is about golf…

It also applies to marketing.

Because just like golf, you have to know your numbers.

You have to know where your weak spots are.

If your sales page is crushing…

And bringing in a bunch of sales…

But overall your funnel isn’t working…

Then there’s a problem.

And you need to know WHAT that problem is.

So if you have the data to know that your first upsell is only converting at 8%, then you know where your focus needs to go.

It’s really that simple.

But it all starts with knowing your numbers.

That’s the key.

That’s how you know where your weaknesses are.

Just like I learned with my golf game in highschool.

Make sense?

I hope so.

Cause that’s all I got for ya today…
