One of the little known secrets to being successful is having someone in your corner that “has your back”.

For example…

When I was 10 years old, my parents had a garage sale and I decided I was going to setup a table and sell some of my baseball cards.

Which seemed like a perfectly good idea to me.

I’d make some money…

And I’d be able to get rid of the cards that I didn’t really want anymore.

Felt like a win-win.

But my mom didn’t see it that way.

She thought it would be a distraction from her garage sale.

And that nobody would buy my baseball cards.

“Honey, I don’t want you doing that” I remember her saying.

Basically instead of being supportive…

And encouraging me to give it a shot…

She crapped on my ambition.

And this wasn’t a one time thing.

This is how my mom is.

She’s extremely critical…

Growing up, nothing I ever did was good enough for her.

So I grew up feeling like everything I did was wrong.

I had no confidence in myself.

I felt like I was worthless.

It wasn’t until I was in college, and I was making some money as an affiliate marketer, that I finally developed a small amount of confidence.

And that was because I found someone that had my back.

That guy was Jeremy Enke.

And at the time, Jeremy was a big poker affiliate.

I think he was making a healthy 6 figures.

And he ran a forum where all of the poker affiliates hung out and talked marketing.

I had never met Jeremy in person.

But after a year or two of posting on his forum, I posted about an idea I had for an “Ohio State vs Michigan” poker tournament online.

It would be held the same week as the Ohio State/Michigan football game.

And I’d get guys from each school to play against each other.

As an affiliate, I’d make like $100 for every person I referred.

I remember when I posted this on the forum, a few days later Jeremy sent me a private message that said something like…

This is a great idea, and I think it will do well.  It’s awesome  to see someone your age making money already doing this.  You have a bright future ahead of you,  and if you need anything don’t hesitate to reach out to me

I remember that message hitting me like a ton of bricks.

Why?

Because it was the first time I felt like someone ever believed in me.

It was the first time someone “had my back”.

Before that I never had someone encouraging me.

All my friends thought I was nuts.

My mom even told me I was scamming people online for money (true story).

So when Jeremy said that to me, something shifted for me.

Because I thought “if this guy thinks I can do it, maybe I can do it”.

To me that’s the power of someone having your back.

It’s something we all need.

And this was very evident last week at our Copy Accelerator event.

You need someone in your corner who’s going to see the potential in you that you don’t see.

And that’s true whether you’re a freelance copywriter making 40 grand…

Or whether you’re running a $20 million business.

Having someone in your corner that has your back can be the difference between you staying where you are… and you getting to where you want to be.

So I’d encrouage you to think about this…

Do you have someone that has your back?

Someone that sees the potential in you that you don’t see?

We all need someone like this.

Cause it’s one of the keys to being succcessful.

You have to have someone in your corner that has your back.

Make sense?

I hope so.

Cause that’s all I got for ya this morning.

Enjoy your Thursday…
