Piggybacking on my email from yesterday about “your best stuff has to come first” in copy, the great David Deutsch used to always tell me…

“Your first line needs to be your best line”.

For example…

One of my favorite first lines ever is from a Bottom Line magalog that David wrote.

It was a section about cancer.

And the opening line of copy was…

“Thousands who have triumphed over cancer owe their lives to an ex-coal miner who never finished highschool”

Now that is a line that grabs you!

It’s dripping with intrigue.

And makes you want to keep reading.

The whole idea of an ex-coal miner who never finished highschool making this amazing discovery is too juicy to ignore.

And that’s what a great first line does…

It immediately pulls you in.

Let’s look at another example…

Chris Haddad’s new offer in the women’s relationship niche has one of the best opening lines I’ve ever seen.

The VSL starts out with a woman saying…

“He kissed me like I was his sister, and I knew I was alone again”

Ouch.

You can feel her pain.

And her heartbreak.

All of that in one sentence.

That’s the power of a good opening line.

And your opening line matters in VSL’s…

Ads…

Emails…

It matters everywhere.

Your first line should be your best line.

This is something David drilled into my head many times back in the day.

That first line matters a lot.

It matters way more than a line on page four.
