A comment from Robert came in this morning…

——

I think I joined your list months back due to Ian Stanley, but when it comes to recently unsubscribing from people/companies that aren’t aligned with me, I realized I actually opened more of your emails than many others.

I resonate with your stories, the ideas you’re sharing, and appreciate your own demonstration of writing/business skills that give me confidence in you being great at what you do and the products you’ll share too.

Just wanted to share my appreciation, as I’m in a particularly chaotic period and have come back to the idea of improving copy, sales and overall life organization

Good on Robert for purging the people he listens to…

This is something I’m a big fan of.

Why?

Cause if you’re following someone who has completely different values than you, you are going to be lead down a dirty path.

I’ll giva ya an example…

Back in 2009 or so when I got into copywriting, there was a marketer I followed who I thought “had it made”.

Everything he had, I wanted…

The baller house in Southern California…

The $100,000 car…

The platinum blonde wife…

From my dimly lit apartment in Columbus, Ohio, this guy looked like he was living the dream.

While I was eating Kraft mac and cheese on a nightly basis, he was eating at Mastro’s with a bunch of other big name marketers.

So I wanted to be just like him.

And it’s why I ate up everything he did.

I dropped a few grand on his courses…

I spent thousands of dollars flying to his live events…

I bought into this guy…hook, line and sinker.

However…

As the years went on, I started to hear “rumblings” about him that didn’t exactly sit well with me.

Like that he was actually not rich, and he was in debt up to his eyeballs…

And that he had a massive coke problem…

I also had one friend (who knew him well) tell me this guy had an elaborate scheme for sleeping with women behind his wife’s back (and most of this was happening with women who attended his live events)…

I quickly realized he wasn’t the fun-loving guy he portrayed in his videos…

He wasn’t that at all.

He was a fraud.

And everything about him was fake.

There was no integrity…

No moral compass.

He’d lie to anyone and everyone – his customers, his wife, his friends – if it meant he got what he wanted.

So after a few years of following him – and listening to all his advice…I cut bait.

No more reading his emails…

Or following his launches…

I was out.

Now the reason I’m sharing this with you, is because I think there’s a pretty important lesson in this story…

You want to learn from the people that have the same morals, integrity and vibes that you have.

The last thing you want to do is follow someone’s advice, and end up rich…. but then you hate the person you’ve become.

That’s no bueno.

So my advice?

Purge the people that you don’t vibe with.

And stick with the people that you do vibe with.

It’s really that simple.

Enjoy your Friday,

– Justin
