A question about a looming recession from a reader hit my inbox this morning…

“I’ve been seeing a lot of talk of a recession from people like Stefan and others in the NHB facebook group.  I have a few clients now, and I’m making around $4k a month, but I’m worried if a recession hits, I could be the guy they cut loose.  Any advice on what I can do as a copywriter to make sure I do well if a recession hits?”

Great question.

And it’s one I’ve been giving a lot of thought to.

Why?

Cause we probably are headed for a recession (even if it’s a minor one).

I saw an article in The Economist that said a recession before 2024 is “very likely”…

And another one in Bloomberg saying that a recession was “inevitable”.

They could both be wrong…

But odds are there will be some turbulence over the next year or so.

So its good to be prepared.

And honestly my suggestions for copywriters is very simple.

So simple in fact, that 97% of copywriters reading this will ignore it.

But do that at your own peril.

Cause you’ll wind up on the chopping block if you igore this advice.

Are you ready?

Here it is…

In a recession the best thing you can do as a copywriter is to focus on delivering better results to your clients.

That might sound obvious…

But here’s why I say that…

In recessions, business owners tend to tighten their purse strings.

The dumb ones will pull back on ad spend…

While others will cut anything that isn’t bringing them a direct ROI (middle managers, the guy who posts on their social media etc…)

So if you’re not producing results…

You’re liable to get the boot.

However…

If you are producing results for clients…

Whether that’s backend sales to their email list…

Facebook ads that are driving sales…

Or simply writing winning sales pages for them…

They’ll be glad to pay you.

Why?

Cause you’re making ’em money. 

When I was on his podcast last week, A-list copywriter, Henry Bingaman mentioned this exact same thing. 

He said “copy and marketing skills are the most recession-proof assets out there”.

Yup.

I agree. 

If you can make sales…

And you can make a business money…

They will need you MORE than ever during a recession (cause they want more sales).

So that’s what I would focus on…

Simply delivering better results to my clients.
