“You’re charging $3k for a sales letter, and you could easily be charging $7.5k. Why haven’t you upped your rates yet?“
I still remember when I said this to a young copywriter named Austin…
The two of us were on a Zoom call together…
And after I reviewed his copy (which was really solid) I asked him why he hadn’t raised his rates yet.
It was a simple question…
But when I asked it to him, I could see him getting uncomfortable.
He squirmed in his chair…
And started rubbing his hands together.
The idea of raising his rates triggered him.
So I wanted to reassure him that everything was alright, and that this was going to be a safe spot to talk about it.
So I said…
“I’m not gonna make you raise your rates, let’s just forget about that. I just want to help you get to the root of why you feel like you can’t raise them. Are you open to doing that?”
He immediately said “yes”.
So we started with a simple exercise…
I had him close his eyes…
And take a couple deep breaths…
And then I asked him a question…
“What makes you think you can’t raise your rates?”
He thought about it for a second…
And then blurted out “cause I don’t deserve it”.
“That makes sense” I said.
I paused for a second.
And then said “Do you mind if I ask you another question?”
“Sure”.
So while he had his eyes closed, I asked him…
“What makes you think you don’t deserve it?”
Austin hesitated for a few seconds…
And mumbled some “ummms”…
I could tell this question was making him very uncomfortable.
So I said… “just say whatever pops up, don’t overthink it”
So he took a big breath…
Even cracked a little smile…
And then said…
“Cause I’m just a piece-of-shit hilbilly from Barlow (this is a town in Kentucky)”
That was not what I was expecting.
But that’s the answer we needed to hear.
Cause for Austin, raising his rates wasn’t really about the mechanical aspect of charging more.
It was about his self worth.
It was about him feeling like he didn’t deserve more money cause he was a “piece-of-shit hilbilly from Barlow”.
That was the real issue.
