My brain is functioning at like 10% capacity this morning, so today’s email is a re-send of one of my favorites.

It’s all about the time I realized I was full of shit for wanting to be “the best”.

Enjoy…

I want to be the best copywriter in the world

This is a line I used to say 5 or 6 years ago.

Why?

Because I was obsessed with being the best.

I wanted to be the copywriter that was known for writing huge winners that people routinely forked over $100k to work with.

I wanted people to tell stories about me the same way they do about Gary Halbert.

This all sounds insane to me now…

But back then, that was my goal.

And I was focused on making it happen.

However…

Sometime in 2016 that all changed.

In 2016, I was at a mastermind, and was talking to a smart guy named Rich.

Rich and I were having a few drinks at the bar before dinner, and I told him all about my goal to be the best copywriter in the world.

Rich was listening intently…

And then he asked me a very simple question…

Would you rather be the best copywriter in the world, or would you rather make 5 million dollars a year?

I laughed.

Mostly because I felt like an idiot.

“5 million dollars a year” I said.

In just a few words, Rich made me realize that deep down I didn’t really care about being the best copywriter in the world.

What I really wanted was all the stuff that came with being the best copywriter in the world.

Things like money, recognition, praise etc…

That’s what I really wanted.

All of the BS I was telling myself about “being a master of my craft” was just that…

BS.

I was lying to myself.

And here’s the thing…

This is quite normal.

Especially among high achievers.

There’s usually a deeper thing that is driving you.

The guy who wants to build a 100 million dollar company might be driven by his lack of self worth.

On an unconcious level, he thinks that if he builds this huge successful company, then he’ll finally be good enough.

He’s never going to admit this to anyone.

But deep down that could be what’s driving him.

And like I said everyone is driven by things like this to some extent (whether you’re aware of it or not).

So it’s worth taking some time and asking yourself…

Why do you want the things that you want?

Is it the reason you’re telling yourself?

Or is there a deeper reason?

The answer might surprise you.

So I suggest exploring it.

You’ll be glad that you did.
