Back when I was a newbie copywriter one of the biggest mistakes I made was starting each project with a blank page.
So instead of having a bunch of ideas of what I wanted to write about…
Or notes on good angles I could use…
I had a blank Google Doc in front of me.
And it was a monumental effort to go from that blank page to getting started.
My headline would be weak…
And my lead would never really “hit”.
So I was forced to keep rewriting them over and over.
Which is why it took me 2+ months to write a sales letter back then.
My big mistake was that I wasn’t properly prepared to write.
Which I now know is what all the top copywriters do.
Even when I write this email each morning, I have a page of notes about what I want to write about.
I know the arguments I want to make…
And the story I want to include…
So the writing part becomes a lot easier…
And I can knock this out in 30 minutes or less.
So if you struggle with getting started with your writing…
Or you find yourself procrastinating because you don’t know what to write about…
My biggest suggestion would be to do the prep BEFORE you write.
Now, you can probably figure this out on your own with some tinkering…
Or…
You can do what I did a few years back and simply use the index card system that Kevin Rogers teaches.
Basically, you just take 10 index cards…
And you write down the main things you want to hit on in your sales letter.
So the first card would be a simple explanation of what it is you’re selling (example below)
This helps you to get clear on what you’re selling…
And the benefits behind it.
And then the other 9 index cards support this by adding in proof, reasons why your reader should buy now, and even how to compare your product to other options out there.
So the index cards make all this super easy.
And as a result…
You don’t have to deal with writer’s block…
Or struggling to figure out what to say…
It gets you writing right away.
Anyways…
I’m a huge fan of things that simplify the writing process…
