Back in 2009 when I was just getting into copywriting, I started a peculiar habit at the gym that wound up making me a bunch of money over the years.

Here’s the story…

At the time I was pretty serious about working out, so I was going to the gym 4 or 5 days a week.

And in between my sets, I would usually just sit there bored, doing nothing.

Which seemed like a waste of time to me…

So one day I decided to print off an old BottomLine magalog written by Gary Bencivenga and bring it to the gym to study inbetween sets.

So I’d do my first set of squats…

And while I was resting for 4-5 minutes, I’d study Gary’s copy relentlessly.

I’d be highlighting headlines that stood out…

And making notes about certain angles in the copy that I really liked. 

I’d do this between every set.

And by the end of my gym session, I probably put a good 30-40 minutes into studying copy. 

The cool thing is I continued this habit for nearly five years. 

If I was going to the gym, I had a piece of copy with me.

Sometimes that was a health promo written by Jim Rutz or Arthur Johnson…

Other times it was a financial offer written by Clayton Makepeace…

Whatever I could get my hands on, I was studying. 

And here’s the thing…

Over the years simply by doing this inbetween sets at the gym, my copy got significantly better.

Seriously…

I went from a wet-behind-the-ears newbie to a guy writing offers that were converting on cold traffic.

I mean the copy that I wrote for my 31 Day Fat Loss Cure offer ended up bringing in over a million dollars in sales in it’s first year!

And I also got hired by big name marketers like Joel Marion and John Romaniello to write copy for them as well. 

So I was doing well…

And my copy was getting better (without having a coach or a mentor at the time)…

All I was doing was writing a lot…

And studying the PROVEN copy I had from the swipes that I had collected.

Point being…

In my opinion, studying PROVEN copy can be like a cheat code.

Because if that copy is converting…

It shows you exactly what people want…

And it gives you you the blueprint for how to sell to them (i.e. what angles to use, what words will resonate etc…)

So having PROVEN swipes to study is critical.
