This is a question I get a lot…

Knowing what you know now, what would you do if you were starting over as a new copywriter today?”

Great question.

First, I wouldn’t make the mistakes I made when I got into copywriting.

I started writing copy in 2008, and I was a stubborn son of a bitch at the time…

I thought I could figure it all out on my own.

And that I didn’t need anyone’s help.

So I spent most of my nights up until 2 AM studying old Dan Kennedy and Gary Halbert books.

Which was helpful…

I learned a lot about copy from those guys…

But those books didn’t give me a detailed roadmap for getting good at copy.

And in fact, everything they taught, I thought I was doing in my copy.

thought my headlines were pulling the reader in…

thought my copy was packed with emotion…

But the reality was, I wasn’t doing any of that stuff.

Truth was…

My headlines were boring…

And my copy was so flat, there was barely a lick of emotion in it.

This is one of the big issues with learning copy on your own…

You can’t see the mistakes in your copy.

So you’re unaware you’re doing anything wrong.

So what did I do to fix this?

For me, it wasn’t until I put my ego aside, and paid David Deutsch to teach me how to get good at copy that my copy started to improve.

Mentoring under David was the first time I ever had “formal” copy training.

And let me tell you…

It was eye-opening.

I realized very quickly that I wasn’t doing enough research (AKA I didn’t know my buyer well enough)…

I realized that my big ideas weren’t big ideas at all. 

They were merely mediocre ideas…

It was one lesson after another while I mentored under him. 

And as a result of that mentorship, not only did my copy get significantly better…

But my income shot up as well.

In fact in the years we worked together, my income went from $220k a year to $700k a year to $2.2 million a year.

That big leap in income would NOT have happened if I hadn’t had a mentor like David.
