For years the NFL was adamant that they didn’t want to be associated with gambling.

Why?

Cause they said it would “hurt the game”…

And they didn’t want the stigma of gambling affecting the sport.

So even though millions of people were betting on games, the NFL didn’t talk about it.

Broadcasters didn’t mention the spread during games…

And the players weren’t allowed near anything gambling related.

At one point the NFL was so opposed to it that Tony Romo (a former quarterback) wasn’t allowed to attend a fantasy football convention because it was in a casino.

That’s how much the league was against gambling…

However…

That all changed in 2018.

Why?

Cause in 2018 the Supreme Court struck down an old law on sports betting…

And in the blink of an eye…

People were allowed to bet on games.

Which brought a FLOOD of new money to the table for the NFL.

All the fantasy football sites like FanDuel and DraftKings wanted in on the action…

And so did the big casinos like MGM and Caesar’s.

There were hundreds of millions (if not billions) of dollars in sponsorships and licensing deals on the line.

So what happened?

Well as you might have guessed…

All the moral qualms the NFL had about gambling disappeared.

No longer was gambling “bad for the game”…

Now it was a way for fans to “enhance their game watching experience”.

So all the bullshit they spewed for years and years…

Went right out of the window when hundreds of millions of dollars were on the line.

Which is funny…

But it’s also a good lesson in human nature…

Cause here’s the truth…

What people “say” and what people “do” are usually two very different things.

The NFL said for years they were against sports betting…

But when given the chance to make a lot of dough from it…

They were all for it.

So what they “said”, and what they “did” were totally different.

And you can see people do this in every area of life…

-People who are overweight will say they “eat healthy”, but in reality they’re stopping at Mcdonald’s and eating ice cream every night

-Men will say they’re looking for a nice, sweet girl and end up with a stripper in their bed…

-A woman will say she doesn’t care about what other people think, and then she’ll feverishly post on Instagram all day to show off her life…

This is human nature.

And what we “say” and what we “do” are usually two very different things…

So if you want to be a good copywriter…

Or a good marketer…

You need to understand this.

Don’t be fooled by what people say.

Simply watch what they do…

And you’ll understand what they’re really about.
