Not a week goes by that someone in my Facebook group doesn’t ask…

“what copywriting books should I be reading?”

It’s a common question…

And if the person is new to copy I usually suggest The Copywriter’s Handbook by Bob Bly (a great place to start)…

But if the person already understands the basics of copy…

Like they have an idea of what a headline is…

What a “hook” is…

And they understand “proof”…

I will actually tell them to NOT read copywriting books.

Why?

Because once you understand the fundamentals of copy, you’d be better off spending that time reading actual pieces of copy.

And here’s why I say that…

When I was running Copy Accelerator, I was training hundreds of copywriters…

And I realized very quickly that the best way for people to learn copy is through examples.

So studying the headlines on winning sales pages…

Or disecting 10 different Facebook ads…

Or breaking down the “big idea” in a direct mail piece…

It’s by studying these examples of real-world copy that you start to truly understand the concepts.

Cause now it’s NOT just concepts…

You’re seeing the concepts in action.

I’ll give ya an example…

If I’m teaching you how to write headlines, I could tell you that a headline needs to have curiosity, specificity and proof in it…

Or…

I could SHOW you a headline like the one below that has curiosity, specificity and proof in it…

Which one has more impact on you?

The example, right?

Having the real-world example of what a headline should look like makes the concept easier to understand.  

That’s why I’m such a big fan of learning through studying pieces of copy in the real world (and not just learning the concepts in a book). 

It helps ingrain the concepts…

And you walk away truly understanding those concepts.
