One of my biggest realizations about money has been that I don’t have to believe what my parents believe about money…

For example…

I’m in Ohio right now cause my dad officially retired yesterday.

So I flew back to celebrate with him.

My dad worked in a factory for 35+ years making rubber conveyor belts for the coal industry.

I honestly don’t know how he did it.

Sounds like a nightmare job to me.

But his job is pretty representative of how I grew up.

My family is very blue-collar.

They believe in working hard.

They believe money is made with physical labor.

They believe you work til you’re 65, then you retire.

And they think if you’re making $50k a year, you’re living the good life.

This was all very evident when we were at the Elks last night for the retirement party.

One conversation I had with my Uncle Steve, he was telling me about a friend of his who just got his pension from General Motors for $45k a year.

My Uncle was saying how this guy was set for life.

“That’s what you got to do, put in the years at one place and get setup with a fat pension like that”.

Having this conversation with my uncle hit me like a ton of bricks.

Cause my life is nothing like this.

It made me realize just how much progress I’ve made over the years.

I used to think rich people were assholes…

I used to think $50k was a lot of money…

I used to think that money was hard to make.

Now I don’t believe any of that.

I think money can be easy to make.

Making a few million dollars a year feels normal to me.

I think having an assistant, flying first class and driving a Range Rover is normal.

I’m not saying any of this to brag…

But that is MY normal now.

It’s what I’m used to.

And what I expect.

All of that probably seems crazy to my parents (and the rest of my family).

And that’s ok.

But here’s the thing…

I don’t have to believe what my parents believe about money.

When you’re a kid you think your parents know everything.

But as you get older, you realize they’re human.

They’re wrong about a lot of things.

Just because they believe something about money or success, doesn’t mean you have to believe the same thing.

That’s a simple idea…

But it’s one that can change your life if you take it to heart.

Make sense?

I hope so.

Cause that’s all I got for today.

Enjoy your Saturday.
